The Conjuring 3: Everything you need to know (2024)

The Conjuring 3, AKA The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, has been delayed, but it's creeping up on us now as the first trailer has now landed.

Like every other movie around, the movie was delayed from its planned September 2020 release and pushed back to 2021. Barring an unexpected last-minute delay, we will be reunited with Ed and Lorraine Warren in June.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga's return as the duo will see the Warrens take on their darkest case yet, without a haunted house in sight. It will centre on the real-life trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, but we'll get into that in a bit.

James Wan has only produced the third movie, with The Curse of La Llorona's Michael Chaves taking over as director, while The Conjuring 2 co-writer David Leslie Johnson has returned to write the threequel.

But what else can we expect from the delayed return of the Warrens? Here's everything you need to know about The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.

The Conjuring 3 release date: When is The Devil Made Me Do It released?

As mentioned above, the third movie was set for release on September 11, 2020 before Warner Bros made the decision to delay it to May 28 in UK cinemas and June 4 in US cinemas.

The movie will also be able to watch on HBO Max in the US for 31 days from June 4, like every other Warner Bros release in 2021. HBO Max is not currently available in countries outside of the US.

Filming took place between June and August 2019, so if you think we've been waiting a while for the movie to release, spare a thought for the cast who've had to keep spoilers for almost two years.

The trailer ends on a literal cliffhanger as Lorraine Warren is seen being grabbed by something on the edge of a cliff. We know she won't die (since the real-life Ed and Lorraine survived the case), but could this be the end of the series?

"There's definitely some hint of continuing," teased Farmiga, with Wilson adding: "We constantly want to push these characters. I would like to [continue] – for no other reason than I would want to keep playing opposite Vera."

The Conjuring 3 cast: Who's back in The Devil Made Me Do It?

It wouldn't be a Conjuring movie without Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, so the third movie just wouldn't be happening if they weren't coming back.

Speaking about returning, Patrick Wilson told The Hollywood Reporter: "The process [of making Conjuring 3] was fantastic, and it's a much different feel. It's still the same bones; it's still very much Ed and Lorraine.

"Again, we are pushing our characters to places they haven't gone, but the film will be a really nice addition because it's definitely a different beast. Pun intended."

Sterling Jerins is also back as the Warrens' daughter Judy, while Ruairi O'Connor will appear as Arne Cheyenne Johnson. Sarah Catherine Hook and Julian Hilliard play Debbie and Julian Glatzel, respectively, with Julian's exorcism kicking off events in the movie.

The trailer also revealed that Fringe and Elementary star John Noble is also in the movie, but it's not clear what his role is yet.

We're not ruling out another appearance from that pesky Valak – played in all movies by Bonnie Aarons – despite the fact that Lorraine banished the demon to hell in The Conjuring 2's climax.

The Conjuring 3 story: What is The Devil Made Me Do It about?

The official synopsis reads: "The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It reveals a chilling story of terror, murder and unknown evil that shocked even experienced real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.

"One of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they’d ever seen before, to mark the first time in US history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defense."

The title refers to the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson who pled not guilty to the manslaughter of his landlord, Alan Bono, on the grounds that he was possessed by a demon when the crime happened.

It involved the Warrens because they were involved in the exorcism of David Glatzel which involved the same demon that Johnson claimed he was possessed by.

The third movie will feel different from the other Conjuring movies purely because there isn't a haunted house in sight, but for Wan, it was important they keep the real-life inspiration.

"All the Conjuring films are based on the case files, so they're more based on the true story aspect of the real-life Warrens. I think that's important. It's important that the mothership stays true to the inspiration of the real people," he explained.

Wan added that it's on a "whole different level" to the other movies, while Chaves teased the scale of the third movie ahead of the trailer release. "In a lot of ways, this is the biggest Conjuring movie," Chaves told IGN.

"I showed the final cut to Vera and her husband and they agreed, and they were like, 'This is the darkest Conjuring movie'.

"It digs into some really dark material. This is definitely a case where there's real consequence, there's real victims... There's real events and real tragedies that happen to the Warrens."

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is released in UK cinemas on May 28 and in US cinemas on June 4. It will also be available to watch on HBO Max in the US from June 4.
