By ANGIE THORNE Guardian staff writer FORT POLK, La. — Good food is essential to keeping the body running at peak capacity, as well as potentially providing emotional comfort when times get tough and a social outlet where you can commiserate with friends while sharing a meal. The perfect location for all of this to happen, if you are a Soldier, is in a dining facility like Fort Polk’s Patriot Inn. The newly renovated DFAC celebrated its grand reopening May 13. The refurbishment’s focus was to provide a great atmosphere, as well as healthier choices following the Go for Green Initiative — a joint service performance nutrition initiative that improves a food environment where service members live and work. The program provides better food and beverage selections with the aim to optimize performance, readiness and health. It also incorporates best practices in health promotion and the latest nutrition science to more effectively impact the nutritional status of service members based on the impact food can have on performance. Command Sgt. Maj. Kenneth Franco, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division command sergeant major, was the guest speaker at the grand opening. KAY EDWARDS 3RD BCT PAO FORT POLK, La. — On Feb. 21, the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, and Patriot Inn Dining Facility, were recognized for their excellence in Army food service, and became regional winners of the Philip A. Connelly award. Connelly devoted his professional life to perfecting food service management in both civilian and military venues. The Philip A. Connelly award is given out annually and was established in recognition of his devotion to food service and working in conjunction with Department of the Army Joint Culinary Center of Excellence, headquartered at Fort Lee, Virginia, and the National Restaurant Association. “Winning this award shows how the Soldiers care about feeding their peers here at 3rd Brigade,” said Sgt. 1st Class Jason Gustad, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd BCT, 10th Mtn Div, and NCOIC of the Patriot Inn DFAC. “It shows that they put in a lot of effort, their creative side, and also their attention to detail.” There are more than 60 areas of inspection, with graders from both the restaurant industry and Fort Lee coming down to evaluate the Patriot Inn. “We had to prepare in many areas — admin, rations, training and cooking procedures,” said Gustad. “We started preparing approximately three months before, so it’s not just cooking a meal and presenting it, there’s so much more than that.” 3rd BCT and the Patriot Inn are among the seven finalists who will be moving on to the Department of the Arm...

To promote esprit de corps with units and soldiers, Fort Hood, Texas hosted its annual Thanksgiving meal competition. Hundreds of Army culinary specialists from several Fort Hood dining facilities battled for food supremacy and the title of best dining facility on post. Each dining facility on Fort Hood takes place in the annual competition. The facilities decorate every surface and have fun themes such as Patriot Inn’s “Hollywood” or Theodore Roosevelt’s “Around the World.” Soldiers entered the dining hall to enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving meal. In the spirit of giving thanks, senior leadership from units on post served the enlisted soldiers to show their appreciation for the hard work the service members working to defend our nation. After all the food was served, Lt. Gen. Pat White announced on Tuesday that the Iron Horse DFAC was the winner of the 2021 Thanksgiving meal competition.
